Ring-tailed lemur

Lemur catta

AUDIO GUIDE

If you see a group of lemurs sitting in the sun with their arms wide open, they are not doing yoga: they are warming up after a cool night. This is the ring-tailed lemur, one of the most famous animals of Madagascar, the great African island where lemurs evolved. Its tail, longer than its body, has white and black rings and works like a flag so the group does not get separated. And in that group, the females are in charge: they choose their mates and eat first. The males, on the other hand, compete in very peculiar fights: they rub their tails with the scent from their wrists and wave them at their rival. The most… fragrant one wins. Today it is endangered by the destruction of Madagascar’s forests. One more reason to look after this unique island.
