Family Musophagidae (turacos)

AUDIO GUIDE

0:00 0:00
If you spot a flash of red among the trees, it may be a turaco taking flight. Many of these African birds hide their red feathers in their wings and only show them when flying. But the most amazing thing about turacos is their color. They are the only birds in the world with a true green pigment; in almost all others, green is a trick of the light. And their red is just as special: it contains copper, something exceptional in the animal kingdom. They live in the forests of Africa and move among the branches with surprising agility, running and leaping more than flying. They feed mainly on fruit, so they are great gardeners of the forest: they disperse seeds wherever they go. Unique colors for unique birds.
