Solomon Cockatoo

Cacatua ducorpsii

AUDIO GUIDE

0:00 0:00
White as snow, with a blue ring around the eyes and a crest that rises when something interests it: that is the Solomon cockatoo, which lives in the rainforests of these Pacific islands. That crest is its way of talking. It raises it to say hello, to show surprise or to impress, and lowers it when it is calm. Like all cockatoos, it has a beauty secret: among its feathers it produces a very fine powder that keeps them clean and waterproof. And it is a great acrobat, able to use its beak as a third foot for climbing. Cockatoos are so intelligent that some keep time with music, something once thought to be unique to humans. Curious, noisy and very expressive.
