Scimitar-horned oryx

Oryx dammah

AUDIO GUIDE

0:00 0:00
This is a story with a hopeful ending. The scimitar-horned oryx, the antelope whose horns curve like a sword, once disappeared from the desert entirely. In 2000 it was declared extinct in the wild. But all was not lost. Thanks to animals living in zoos around the world, oryx began to be released in Chad in 2016. Today they roam the Sahel once again, and the species has moved from extinct in the wild to endangered. It is a master of the desert: it can go a long time without drinking, gets water from plants, and its white coat reflects the sun. And seen in profile, its two horns look like one. Perhaps that is why animals like it are said to have inspired the legend of the unicorn.
