It may be the most spectacular bird in the world. When the peacock spreads its fan, it displays around two hundred feathers decorated with shimmering “eyes.” And a detail worth knowing: it is not its tail, but feathers that grow just above it and can measure up to a meter and a half.
The most remarkable thing is that those blues and greens are not pigments. They are microscopic structures in the feathers that play with the light. That is why the color changes depending on how you look at it.
The male quivers his fan to impress the females, who choose the most striking one. And although he seems heavy, he flies well and sleeps high up in the trees.
It is the national bird of India, where its powerful call even serves as an alarm when a tiger is nearby.
