AUDIO GUIDE

0:00 0:00
It is the largest bird on the planet, but it cannot fly. It doesn’t need to: the ostrich is the fastest bird on land, able to run at seventy kilometers per hour thanks to its powerful legs with just two toes. Its eyes are the largest of any land animal, even bigger than its brain, and they let it spot predators from a great distance. Its eggs break records too: each one weighs as much as two dozen chicken eggs. By the way, it is a myth that it hides its head in the ground. When it feels threatened, it lies down with its neck stretched out along the ground, and from a distance it looks as if it has buried it. And watch out for its legs: an ostrich’s kick can scare off even a lion.
