Masked Lovebird

Agapornis personatus

AUDIO GUIDE

0:00 0:00
If you see two little parrots snuggled up, preening each other, they are probably lovebirds. Their scientific name, Agapornis, means “love bird”, and they have earned it: pairs spend almost the whole day together and even share their food. The masked lovebird lives in the savannas of Tanzania, among acacias and baobabs. It is easy to recognize: a black head like a mask, a white ring around the eyes, a red beak and a yellow collar. It builds dome-shaped nests inside tree hollows, carrying strips of bark and grass in its beak. And it never strays too far from water, because it needs to drink several times a day. Small, colorful and very family-minded. A true symbol of loyalty.
