Pyrrhura molinae (green-cheeked conure) · Pyrrhura lepida (pearly conure)

AUDIO GUIDE

Small, chatty and always on the move: that is what conures of the genus Pyrrhura are like. Their name means “fire tail”, because of the reddish tone of the tail in many of them. Here you can meet two South American species. The green-cheeked conure, from Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina, has a brown head and a scale-patterned chest. The pearly conure, from the southern Amazon, is one of the most colorful: crimson-red belly, touches of blue and a chest with markings reminiscent of pearls. They live in flocks that travel through the forest with constant chatter, and at night they sleep together, huddled in tree hollows. They are so playful that they hang upside down and even lie on their backs to play. Pure energy in miniature.
