Small, compact and big-headed: that is what African parrots of the genus Poicephalus are like. Here you can meet two of them.
The Senegal parrot lives in the savannas of West Africa. It has a gray head, a green back and an orange-yellow chest with a green V. It is so fond of millet and corn that some farmers consider it a pest. In French it is called “youyou”.
Meyer’s parrot lives farther south and east, in savannas and dry forests. It is brown, with a blue-green belly and touches of yellow on the head and wings, and usually nests in holes abandoned by woodpeckers.
Unlike other parrots, they are calm and observant: they can spend long periods motionless among the leaves, camouflaged. Small, but very clever.
