Macaca sylvanus

AUDIO GUIDE

Did you know that a monkey lives in the wild in Europe? It is the Barbary macaque, also known as the Gibraltar ape. A small population lives on the Rock, and legend has it that the British will remain there as long as there are monkeys on the rock. Its true home is just across the Strait, in the cedar forests of the mountains of Morocco and Algeria, where it endures snowy winters. It is the only macaque living outside Asia, and it has almost no tail. But its most surprising trait is another: the males look after the infants, carry them around and play with them, and even use them to make friends with other males. Today it is endangered, mainly because of the illegal trade in infants as pets. A neighbor well worth protecting.
